Can we get any MORE meta???
Well, when you host a discussion on the nature of identity in Second Life, I guess it comes with the territory, doesn't it?
My second little salon discussion at the Saturn Grill went quite well. I had a little more lead time to advertise and I at least tried to put out a Notice to the Quantum Tribe Laboratories Group, but was thwarted by the fact that I, personally, was not at that membership level, so I settled for a quick announcement in Group Chat and left it at that.
Alas, my chat record was borked, so I have no transcript to work from. As it was, my intent was to write up something a little more descriptive, using the transcript to jog my memory and get quotes. But I have no transcript to work from, so I'll just have to go from recollection and wave my hands a bit at the uncertain parts.
At first only one or two people showed up but not long after I sent out the QTLabs notice, a few of the regulars there made an appearance, including one GypsyDoctor Donat. GypsyDoctor, I am now allowed to reveal, was the gentleman who flirted with my partner. (I'd pointed him to the blog and he seemed amused, a touch flattered and genuinely surprised that his gestures had been seen as flirtation.) When we got on the subject of alts, GypsyDoctor mentioned that he likewise had an alt, a white wolf named Bildeaux Braun, whom I was only distantly acquainted with.
Bildeaux himself showed up and he and GypsyDoctor got in a short row about who, exactly, was whose alt. Bildeaux talked about his surprise at encountering what might be termed anti-furry prejudice as he made his way through Second Life. However, he felt comfortable in his wolfish skin and didn't want to shed it, and thus GypsyDoctor Donat incarnated into Second Life soon after.
Until that point, I'd had absolutely no knowledge of any connection between the two, other than they were both avies I knew through Quantum Tribe. I remarked later to GypsyDoctor that he and Beginning had something in common--that they were both alts created to serve a given purpose, who ended up forging lives of their own.
Just when I thought this world could get no stranger.
Anyway. The rest of the discussion went well.
caliburnsusanto was kind enough to drop by and give some of his insights. (Thanks, Caliburn! I hope you found the discussion more engaging than the one you'd gone to the day before . . . ;) I particularly liked the remark about "I want to meet the puppets, not the puppeteers!", even if I don't entirely agree with the sentiment myself.) We talked about gender-swapping (I even changed back and forth between boyshape and girlshape as a demonstration) and role-playing (Star Trek seems to be quite a popular one--I hadn't fully realized that until two different Star Trek roleplayers showed up) and the differences and similarities between our fleshy selves and our second selves (quite a few female avies use their real first names for their avatars. Curious phenomenon.) I normally schedule the discussions for an hour, but things ended up going for an extra half-hour before I wrapped things up.
Thanks to all who showed up and tune in next week! At GypsyDoctor's suggestion, this week's discussion will be about time in Second Life--how much time we spend in it and how much time is worth it. (I'll link to the Event listing when it goes up officially--I just posted it this morning.)
